HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Indiana DNR says a violent felon is back behind bars after he spent the night in a tree in Martin County.

Martin County Deputies were in a vehicle chase with the suspect Saturday night, when he fled into the woods on foot. Officials say the suspect hid in a tree overnight to escape deputies.

Officials with the Indiana DNR say a tipster spotted the suspect Sunday morning. Thats when they say he fought a Martin County Police Deputy then fled.

Indiana Conservation Officer K-9 Smoky and handler Jim Schreck were off duty and responded early Sunday to assist in the pursuit.

Officials say Martin County Deputies followed K-9 Smoky through dense briars down a cliffside before finding the suspect hiding in the White River.

Officials with the Indiana DNR say the suspect was treated for injuries, including severe foot lacerations, then was taken into custody.
