Euro 2024 hero just gave Liverpool clear transfer instruction as Bayern Munich ruled out

“We have the best goalkeeper in the world, and we have the best number two in the world.”

This was the verdict of Jurgen Klopp with regards to Alisson Becker and Caoimhín Kelleher, and while people can obviously dispute his claim, Liverpool unquestionably possesses two excellent goalkeepers. But recently, the club has been linked with a move for another shot stopper, Giorgi Mamardashvili of Valencia. He has been representing Georgia at Euro 2024 and has been doing so superbly.

After the matches on Sunday, which included his side being knocked out by Spain, Mamardashvili had faced 38 shots on target at the European Championship , at least twice as many as any other goalkeeper, saving 30 of them. It is clear why he is drawing attention from top clubs, and not just the Reds. However, the 23-year-old has made clear his conditions if he is to make a move this summer.

Mamardashvili’s record is worth further scrutiny. Georgia’s tournament might be over but its goalkeeper saved four goals more than expected (per FBRef ) in just four games. The Valencia man’s highpoint came against Czechia, with his side drawing 1-1 thanks largely to him making 11 saves worth a combined 2.9 post-shot expected goals.

He also bettered xG by 10.2 in La Liga this season, suggesting he has the shot stopping skills Liverpool would require. The Georgian has also been linked with Bayern Munich , but he has revealed he would have no interest in warming the bench in the Bundesliga.

“Bayern still have the best goalkeeper in the world,” Mamardashvili said to Sky Sports in Germany (via The Standard ) in reference to Manuel Neuer. “Therefore, it's currently not possible to move there. I would only go there if I'll play. If I don't play, then no.”

While he was not speaking about Liverpool, the player’s stance on a potential move to Munich clearly suggests he would not fancy playing second fiddle to Alisson. A potential exit for Kelleher is rumored every summer, with his abilities befitting regular first team football. But even if he does leave the Reds, it does not sound like Mamardashvili would be willing to be his replacement.

The Georgia international is under contract with Valencia until 2027 – the same as Alisson at Liverpool, and one year longer than Kelleher. Mamardashvili’s market value is estimated at $37.6m (£29.7m/€35m) by Transfermarkt . His performances at Euro 2024 will likely see that rise.

Liverpool.com says: If there is a tiny downside to having the best goalkeeper in the world and a classy understudy, it is that they are very difficult to replace. Mamardashvili looks up to the task but his view on wanting to be number one will make it tricky for Liverpool to complete a deal.
