The paradise destination of Tulum, Mexico has become a popular place not just for Black travelers but also for Black expats. The growing Black community has become so alluring for Black expats that there are online spaces and communities called Black Expats in the Riviera Maya and Black in Tulum.
Both groups foster community and a safe space for Black people living in or traveling through the region. While the groups provide resources and tips, this signifies the growing interest in the region.
As more people relocate to Tulum, the number of Black-owned businesses travelers can support is also increasing. The next time you’re heading to the area, consider supporting the growing list of Black-owned restaurants and culinary experiences in Tulum.
Boho Vegano
Turner Francis founded the vegan company Coco Yogo while living in Dubai. It was a staple of healthy living and a popular place for healthy treats. She sold the company in 2017 before moving to Mexico and is now fostering a healthy lifestyle while living in Tulum through her culinary experience, known as the “Gratitude Gathering” with Boho Vegano.
Guests who book will tap into their creativity as Francis guides participants in a hands-on plant-powered feast.
Francis identifies as a British-born Jamaican. Her vegan recipes are inspired by her Jamaican roots and heritage, along with her travels. “Expect to taste the flavors of the Caribbean and Mexico and a hint of Britishness,” she says.

Che’z Cocco
Che’z Cocco is a small, Afro-Mexican-owned brunch spot in Tulum. The restaurant pays homage to the owner, Cocco Zárate, home of Ometepec Guerrero. Located on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, the town is in a region known as Costa Chica, which is known to have the largest Afro-Mexican population.
While most people who identify as Afro-Mexican are along Mexico’s west coast, restaurants like Che’z Cocco give travelers insight into Afro-Mexican cuisine. The menu is a fusion of cuisines, including pancakes, crepes, enchiladas, burritos, and the Mexican breakfast dish chilaquiles. Everything on the menu is natural and worth giving a try.
