UEFA are now set to investigate gestures Jude Bellingham allegedly made after scoring his dramatic equaliser against Slovakia on Sunday night to keep his country in Euro 2024.

A spokesperson said: "Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector will conduct a disciplinary investigation regarding a potential violation of the basic rules of decent conduct by the English FA player, Jude Bellingham, having allegedly occurred in the scope of this match."

If Bellingham is found to have breached Article 57 of the FIFA disciplinary code, he could face a ban and a hefty fine.

Article 57 reads: "Anyone who insults someone in any way, especially by using offensive gestures or language, or who violates the principles of fair pay or whose behaviour is unsporting in any other way may be subject to sanctions in accordance with art. 10 ff."

UEFA has also opened disciplinary proceedings against the Three Lions for the lighting of fireworks and crowd disturbances. A UEFA spokesperson told Mirror Football : "Following the review of the officials reports for ENG-SVK match, disciplinary proceedings have been opened against the English Football Association for lighting of fireworks and crowd disturbances. The CEDB will take a decision on this case in due course. No further proceedings were opened from this match."

Bellingham denied any wrongdoing on social media platform X on Sunday evening, writing in response to a viral clip of his gesture: "An inside joke gesture towards some close friends who were at the game. Nothing but respect for how that Slovakia team played tonight."

Back in 2019, Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone was forced to issue an apology after making a similar gesture back following a Champions League knockout tie with Juventus .

The move was later mocked by Cristiano Ronaldo , who netted a hat-trick to turn the tie around during the second leg in Turin, and the Portuguese superstar later received a whopping fine worth a reported €20,000 for 'improper conduct' - imposed by UEFA.

Meanwhile, Slovakia boss Francesco Calzona took no issue with Declan Rice , who will escape punishment, following their heated verbal exchange after the full-time whistle. The pair had to be separated after Calzoni approached Turkish referee Umut Meler and something appeared to rile midfielder Rice, who was held back by team-mates.

Calzona later explained: “Rice was supposed to go to the referees and say goodbye and then leave. I had to speak to the referees and he was carrying on, continuing to speak. Then he apologised and it all ended there.”

Expert lip-readers have since claimed Rice allegedly said several expletives and also mocked Calzona's baldness. Hero Bellingham said after his stunning, clutch over-head kick saved the day: “You’re 30 seconds from going home and having to listen to all the rubbish and feeling like you’ve let people down.

“Playing for England should be the most proud moment of your career but often it’s quite difficult. There’s a really high intense pressure. The fans expect a lot from us regardless of what happened in recent tournaments years and years ago."
