There has been much focus on Liverpool’s pursuit of Anthony Gordon over the last few days. One thing that was acknowledged was that the Reds are already well stocked for players in his position.

Unless someone leaves, Gordon would be primarily competing with Luis Díaz for the left-wing role. That’s before we get to Cody Gakpo , Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez , all of whom have played there in recent years.

Liverpool has far greater needs elsewhere, namely at center-back. One of the Reds former players has urged the club to sign an England defender currently having a fine tournament at Euro 2024 .

The player in question is Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace . He has been impressing Glen Johnson, as the former right-back explained when recently speaking to Betfred Insights .

“He’s still a young lad, he makes common mistakes like every single player does but one that sticks out in my head was in the game against Denmark where he made a mistake but then all of a sudden, he came out of nowhere, got down and made the block, so I love that attitude,” Johnson said. “He didn’t sulk or blame it on anyone else, he just got back and dealt with it, so if he’s got that mentality now, then he’s going to be a great player for sure.”

It has been reported that Palace have put a $82m (£65m/€77m) price tag on Guehi. Johnson isn’t sure if that fee would be justified now but has no doubts about the player’s long-term credentials.

“I’m not sure he’s worth £65 million right now, but two years from now it could be considered cheap,” he said. “It does seem rather expensive at the moment, but he’s only going to go for whatever people are willing to pay, and if someone else is willing to pay it, then I think Chelsea and Liverpool should as well,” Johnson added, making reference to two of his former clubs. “In terms of his profile, he looks like he’s going to be the real deal.”

Guehi has two years remaining on his contract, making this summer Palace’s best chance to cash in on a player valued at $41m (£32m/€38m) by Transfermarkt . His strong performances for a struggling England side have clearly impressed Johnson and will bolster the Eagles’ bargaining position.

Liverpool.com says: There is much to admire about Guehi. As he plays on the left of the center of defense, could he be the long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk? Johnson’s comments at least give fans and Richard Hughes that possibility to ponder.
