    Juveniles arrested while allegedly breaking into vehicles

    On June 24, at approximately 3:23 p.m., officers responded to the St. Charles Towne Center parking lot after a citizen reported seeing a group of four juveniles breaking into several cars.

    Officers arrived to the parking lot and the four suspects immediately fled on foot but were quickly apprehended, according to a release from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office. An investigation found three vehicles had been broken into and damaged, and several tools used to enter the cars were recovered from the suspects, the release said.

    The four juveniles, including three 15-year-olds from Accokeek and a 14-year-old from Fort Washington, were arrested at the scene and charged with juvenile offense reports for breaking and entering a motor vehicle, destruction of property and other related crimes, according to the release. All were later released to a parent.

    Father allegedly chokes daughter after argument

    On June 24 around 12:50 a.m., Charles sheriff’s officers responded to Mesquite Court in Waldorf for the report of a domestic assault.

    Upon arrival, officers made contact with a girl, who said that her father, Julius Day, 42, and the girl’s mother had been arguing, charging documents say. When Day returned home from work, he opened up the girl’s bedroom door and put her little brother there to sleep, prompting an argument, according to charging documents.

    The girl kept refusing, so Day allegedly pushed her and got on top of her, choking her for approximately two seconds. The girl said she almost lost consciousness but was able to push him off and call 911, charging documents say. Alcohol was a factor in the incident, the documents say.

    Day was charged with first- and second-degree assault.

    Suitland man allegedly steals from store

    On June 5, Charles sheriff’s officers responded to the Home Depot located in Waldorf for the reported theft of power tools. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the store’s asset protection specialist.

    Officers learned that the suspect, Theron Douglas Kidd, is known to the asset protection specialist due to his alleged involvement in two previous incidents, according to charging documents.

    Kidd was allegedly seen on tape entering the Home Depot on May 24, going through the store with a cart and stopping in the power tools section of the store. He allegedly tried to climb a Milwaukee power tools display case before an employee stopped him and attempted to offer service, the charging documents say.

    Kidd left the area for a short period of time before returning to the display case. When he returned to the display case, he allegedly attempted to break into it. He allegedly bent the bars of the case and began taking out boxes of tools, charging documents say.

    Nine tools, worth a total of $3,091, were reportedly stolen. Kidd fled the store, the documents say.

    Felony theft charges were filed against Kidd on June 25.

    Woman allegedly charges boyfriend with knife

    On June 26, Charles sheriff’s officers had a report of a domestic assault filed at the district station in La Plata.

    A man informed officers that Ava Joy Montgomery, 51, of Newburg allegedly struck him with her fist and hit him in the chest with a metal spoon during an argument, charging documents say.

    While the man was attempting to leave the house, Montgomery allegedly grabbed a butcher’s knife and charged him. Court documents make no mention of the man sustaining any wounds or damage from the knife, although he had visible injuries to his upper left chest area.

    Montgomery was charged with first- and second-degree assault.

    Escapee caught, busted on drug charges

    On June 23, deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 33-year-old man who had escaped police custody in May by removing his ankle-monitoring device.

    According to a sheriff’s office press release, while on routine patrol Deputy Brandon Reynolds “spotted and recognized” James Perry Bond, who was wanted on an open warrant. According to court records, Bond’s last known address was Dameron.

    A search of Bond yielded suspected drugs and paraphernalia.

    In addition to two counts of second-degree escape and one count of malicious destruction of property, Bond is charged with possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.

    The defendant has been denied bond. A district court hearing on the latest charges Bond is facing is scheduled for Aug. 13.

    Woman alleges boyfriend assaulted her

    On June 27, Deputy Ryan McLean was sent to a home in Great Mills to investigate an alleged assault.

    According to McLean, a woman at the home claimed that earlier in the evening, her boyfriend, identified in court documents as Keith S. Brown, 34, of Great Mills, arrived at the residence “extremely intoxicated” and then assaulted her.

    Brown allegedly grabbed her by the throat and later slapped her. McLean stated in charging documents that Brown’s accuser, “advised she felt as if she was close to losing consciousness while being choked.”

    A woman who was at the residence at the time reportedly intervened in the assault before the sheriff’s office was called. Brown was subsequently apprehended.

    Brown, who is charged with first-degree assault and second-degree assault, is being held without bond. A district court hearing on the charges he is facing is scheduled for Aug. 1.

    Virginia fugitive nabbed

    On June 27, a 42-year-old Lusby man wanted in King George, Va., for violation of probation was arrested in St. Mary’s County.

    According to charging papers filed by Cpl. Timothy White of the St. Mary’s sheriff’s office, the fugitive was identified as Mark Anthony Barber. According to Virginia court records, Barber was charged with grand larceny in 2022 and subsequently convicted.

    After initially being held without bond, Barber was released on his own recognizance June 28. A district court hearing on his fugitive charge is scheduled for July 30.

    Woman charged with assaulting teen

    On June 25, Trooper Timothy Eckrich of the Maryland State Police Leonardtown Barrack began investigating a stabbing. During an interview with a 19-year-old male who was hospitalized, Eckrich was told what started as a verbal argument escalated. A 21-year-old Lexington Park woman, identified in court documents as Dymond T. Broadie, allegedly hit her accuser on his head several times and later stabbed him “just below his chest,” Eckrich said.

    Eckrich described the knife wound as “superficial and non-life-threatening.”

    The trooper learned the alleged incident had been captured on a doorbell security camera.

    Broadie was later arrested at her residence. The knife allegedly used in the attack was recovered from her home.

    Broadie is charged with first-degree assault and second-degree assault.

    Later that day, Broadie was released on her own recognizance. A district court hearing on the charges she is facing is scheduled for July 23.

    Man sought for car theft

    On June 23, a St. Leonard woman report to the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office that a 32-year-old Port Republic man who she had lent her vehicle to earlier in the month had failed to return it even after she texted him to do so.

    Deputy Dylan DeSantis stated in court documents that the woman’s 2009 Hyundai Accent was reportedly being driven by Matthew William Swann without the owner’s permission. Swann is charged with unauthorized removal of a motor vehicle and felony theft.

    A summons has been issued for Swann. A district court hearing on the charges he is facing is scheduled for Aug. 5.

    Carolina fugitive caught

    On June 26, a 48-year-old Newport, N.C., man was arrested in Calvert County on a fugitive charge. According to Detective Jeffrey Murphy, the defendant, identified as Matthew Lee Harris, is wanted in Carteret County, N.C., on a charge of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

    Harris is being held without bond. He has voluntarily waived extradition to North Carolina. A district court hearing on the fugitive charge is scheduled for July 26.

    Swimmer charged with trespassing, disorderly conduct

    During the late afternoon hours of June 22, Calvert sheriff’s office deputies responded to the Fishing Creek area of Chesapeake Beach for the report of an intoxicated man who had jumped in the water.

    According to Deputy Taylor Strong, the man, later identified as John Leland Morgan, 60, of Chesapeake Beach, has “jumped off several boats” and into the creek.

    Strong stated in court papers that the defendant taunted and threatened authorities and was “screaming profanities.”

    Morgan eventually got out of the water on his own and was arrested. The following day he was released on his own recognizance.

    Morgan is charged with three counts of trespassing, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and failure to obey a lawful order. A district court hearing on the charges he is facing is scheduled for July 22.

    Woman facing charges in ambulance incident

    On June 26, several charges were filed against a 40-year-old Lusby woman related to an alleged incident that occurred in a Solomons parking lot on June 19.

    According to court documents filed by Deputy Hayden Jones of the Calvert sheriff’s office, the defendant, identified as Lauren Ann Simpson, interfered with three emergency responders from Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department who were on an ambulance call.

    Jones said Simpson had asked the crew to move the ambulance. Explaining they were on a call, the three responders declined the defendant’s request.

    The deputy stated in court papers that Simpson “became irritated” when the responders declined. She is alleged to have gotten in the vehicle and moved it herself.

    Jones said in court documents there is surveillance camera footage that shows the defendant moving the emergency vehicle, which, fully equipped, is worth an estimated $600,000.

    Simpson has been charged with three counts of obstructing firefighters etc., unauthorized removal of a motor vehicle, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle and rogue and vagabond.

    Additionally, Simpson was issued traffic citations for driving a vehicle without the owner’s consent, willfully tampering with a motor vehicle, climbing into a vehicle with malicious intent and attempting to manipulate a vehicle with malicious intent.

    A court summons was issued for Simpson. A district court hearing on the charges she is facing is scheduled for Aug. 12.

    Unsolved boat, board thefts

    On June 15, Deputy Timothy Rzepkowski of the Calvert sheriff’s office investigated a report of a theft from a community common area on Forrest Drive in Chesapeake Beach. A woman told the deputy her aluminum paddle boat was stolen sometime after 6 p.m. on June 12. The boat is a three-seater and approximately 8- to 10-feet long. The estimated value of the vessel is $1,000.

    Rzepkowski also responded to Bayview Drive where a citizen reported the theft of a red, white and blue 12-foot long BIC paddle board and black collapsible paddle. The board and paddle were stolen from the community common area sometime after 5 p.m. on June 14. The estimated value of the stolen property is $1,550.
