    CHP ups enforcement for Fourth of July holiday

    The California Highway Patrol announced that it will have as many officers on patrol as possible during a maximum enforcement period that begins on the evening of July 4.

    The CHP regularly initiates these periods around major holidays . The period that starts this week is from 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 4, to midnight on Sunday, July 7.

    During that nearly 4-day stretch, CHP officers will look out for speeders, drivers who may be intoxicated, and other unsafe drivers, as well as help any motorists who may be stranded or need help.

    “The safety of the public is our top priority. Slow down, drive responsibly, and ensure you and your loved ones reach your destination safely,” CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said in a statement.

    The CHP said that during last year’s maximum enforcement period for the Fourth of July holiday, 68 people were killed in crashes around the state, with nearly half of those not wearing a seatbelt.

    Additionally, 1,224 people were arrested for driving under the influence during that period.
