Newcastle has clear Anthony Gordon plan to avoid Everton repeat amid Liverpool interest

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon's head has been turned following speculation Liverpool were interested in bringing the England international to Anfield .

Gordon , who was named Newcastle's player of the season last term, was reportedly offered to Liverpool over the weekend with the Magpies battling PSR concerns. In return, it has been claimed Newcastle wanted Jarell Quansah in the proposed deal for Gordon, a request Liverpool were unwilling to accommodate.

Those PSR fears have been alleviated now on Tyneside after they sold Yankuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion for $41 million and Newcastle academy graduate Elliot Anderson for $44 million to Nottingham Forest. They also managed to get a fee for outgoing director of football Dan Ashworth, although it has not been confirmed how much Manchester United paid in compensation to release him from his Newcastle contract.

The Telegraph reports Gordon, who forced through a move to Tyneside from Everton back in 2023 by failing to turn up for training, has had his head turned after the Reds failed to meet Newcastle's asking price for the England winger.

They also claim Gordon, a boyhood Liverpool fan , was so excited by the prospect of a move to Anfield that at one point he believed he would be signing for the Reds, only to have that dream crushed when a bid did not emerge.

As a result, Newcastle are now said to be worried about the 23-year-old's state of mind and are preparing to 'show Gordon some love' when he returns from England duty. What that "love" means is unclear. But it could see Gordon ink a bumper new deal to stay with Newcastle, tying up his immediate future in the short term.

There is no doubt that Gordon has become a much better player since his move to Newcastle and would be deserving of a new deal, with his current one set to come to an end in 2026.

However, with Liverpool's interest now known, a new contract could lead to the deal including a release fee clause. Newcastle found themselves in a PSR hole over the weekend, and ensuring that Gordon is sold further down the line, albeit for good money, could be something that interests them too.

The Magpies forked out $56 million to bring Gordon to St James' Park in 2023, and now with Newcastle in a strong negotiating position, he will likely cost nearly double what they paid for him, which could deter Liverpool - at least for this summer.
