JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – AMR Central Mississippi has 13 newly trained emergency medical technicians in Hinds County.

The graduates will support Emergency Medical Services (EMS) as part of AMR’s “Earn While You Learn” course.

“The first step is learning CPR, and then we have to learn all the systems of the body, as well as learning for different, different medications and different systems in the body. And then we work our way down to care patient,” said John Ready, a graduate.

Healthcare workers said the course reduces the shortage of EMS caregivers.

“I wanted to serve my community for a while now, and I feel like everything’s coming full circle. So, this is the time to get out there and be able to help as many people as possible,” said Tiffany Darnell, a graduate.

Officials said nine of the graduates will work full time for AMR, and the others will take their skills to local fire departments.

The next course will begin on August 12. Applicants are paid during the three-month long program.
