Woman found dead in burning house in Arapahoe County

DENVER (KDVR) — A woman’s body was recovered from a residential home that was on fire in Arapahoe County on Monday morning, according to officials.

The fire was reported at about 10 a.m., according to the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office and Bennett-Watkins Fire Rescue, after neighbors noticed smoke rising from a home in the 600 block of Bersshine Street. The subdivision is located off of Interstate 70, about four minutes east of Watkins.

According to Ginger Delgado, public information officer for the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were the first to arrive on scene. Neighbors reported that they had already knocked on the home’s door to see if anyone was home, but no one answered.

Fire crews then arrived on scene and began an aggressive attack on the fire, which was largely inside the house. According to Caleb Connor, assistant chief of Bennett-Watkins Fire Rescue, the house was severely damaged, but the fire remained within the interior.

While fighting the fire, firefighters reported they found a dead woman inside the house. Any other details about her condition were not released. Her death and the fire are under investigation.

At about 1 p.m., officials held a press conference and said no other people were in the house. Deputies had also not been inside the house yet for the investigation as crews were still clearing the house with ventilation and “mopping up” the remaining fire.

Officials said six firefighting agencies responded to the scene, which is about 45 firefighters.

The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office will release the woman’s cause and manner of death, along with her identification, at a later time.
