Heat advisory in place in SW La.

There is a heat advisory in effect for the first half of the week in Southwest Louisiana with the possibility of an excessive heat warning upgrade in some areas.

Chanelle Stigger, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service Lake Charles office, said temperatures are expected in the mid-90s this week, but area moisture could bring heat indices up to about 114 degrees across a majority of Southwest Louisiana.

These dangerous heat index values could bring about heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not given. Residents are advised to avoid strenuous activity and prolonged time outside, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and drink plenty of water. Do not leave children or pets in vehicles

Stigger said the heat advisories are in place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

In regards to the tropics, Stigger said “there is no cause for concern across our area” at this moment.

Beryl is now a Category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph. It is forecast to strengthen again to a Category 4 storm as it moves through the Windward Islands and Caribbean Sea.

“No impacts are expected across Southwest Louisiana in the next five days,” Stigger said.

Tropical Storm Chris has moved inland along the Mexico coastline with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph. Stigger said weakening is now expected and no impacts are expected in the area from the storm.
