HINDS COUNTY, Miss. ( WJTV ) – The Hinds County Board of Supervisors is facing backlash for their decision to move forward with the creation of a solar farm.

A Raymond resident filed an appeal against the project on Friday, June 28.

Despite county officials emphasizing that the solar farm will bring in tax revenue to the county, many residents remain against it.

Supervisor Robert Graham, District 1, said not much can be shared about the project because they’re now in litigation.

“It does not come to us. I am not sure what is next from this point, but since it’s in litigation, I’m being very guarded as to what I say,” Graham stated.

Supervisor Bobby McGowan said the county should listen to what the people want.

“The people have spoken, over a thousand signatures. They don’t want it in the area, and I am that voice for them. I am all for economic growth. I want to see economic growth in Hinds County but not to disrespect the people,” McGowan said.

Brian O’Shea, the director of public engagement with Apex Clean Energy, which owns the solar farm, said, “We have incorporated significant community feedback from our open house on May 14 and the public hearings held on May 28. We will continue to take in feedback to improve the project further leading up to construction next year.”

O’Shea said the project will be huge economically for Hinds County, and they’re proud to work with the local farmers and others within the community.
