Newcastle's plan to stop Liverpool from completing Anthony Gordon transfer emerges

Newcastle is viewing Liverpool's bid for Anthony Gordon as opportunistic - and its planning to give the forward a warm welcome when he returns from England duty.
The winger may be representing his country at Euro 2024 this summer, but his club future was thrown into doubt after Newcastle had to deal with a deficit in its financial accounts. Talks between Newcastle and Liverpool over the 23-year-old took place but ultimately broke down after the Merseyside club couldn't meet the Toon's valuation.
Although Arne Slot's team never officially made an offer, Gordon was swayed by the interest from his boyhood club , leaving Newcastle worried about his mindset ahead of pre-season training later this month. That's according to The Telegraph .
Gordon previously forced a move away from Everton to secure a transfer to Newcastle last year, and pressuring another club to sell him within a year and a half would undoubtedly damage his reputation with his current employer.
However, the Magpies are planning to rally behind him upon his return from the Euros and will encourage fans to do the same if the player misses out on a dream move. It's claimed Newcastle has questioned the sincerity of Liverpool's interest in Gordon, suspecting it was a tactical move due to Newcastle's precarious financial situation before they sold Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to Brighton and Nottingham Forest respectively.
Despite Gordon's wish to join his childhood team, Newcastle, now on a stable financial footing, don't foresee a deal being resurrected. It's been reported that Liverpool considered including either Joe Gomez or Jarrel Qaunsah as part of the deal, but the cash offered wasn't sufficient to persuade Newcastle into selling.
Rumours about a possible deal could ramp up once Gordon is back from England duty, with over two months remaining in the summer transfer window. However, Newcastle is eager to keep the former Everton winger and don't anticipate further discussions with Liverpool at this stage.
