Viggo Mortensen’s Aragorn might show up in Andy Serkis’ Gollum movie , the Lord of the Rings actor said in a roundtable interview – but it depends on a few factors. Mortensen made the comments after receiving his Karlovy Vary International Film Festival award and said he’s not opposed to reprising his role as Aragorn, over 20 years after Peter Jackson’s version of king of Gondor’s story ended.
“I haven’t read a script, so I don’t know,” Mortenson said (thanks, THR ). “The script is the most important thing to me unless I’m broke, I have no money and I’m lucky to get any job. So it depends.”

Serkis’ film has an anticipated 2026 release date, so presumably, a script should be ready before too long, assuming no delay also assuming Serkis actually asks Mortensen to reprise his role.
It's a slightly different answer to one Mortensen gave after Serkis first announced the project. Then, the actor said he would only do it if it made sense for the character , a condition that isn't entirely out of the question. J.R.R. Tolkien only ever covered that span of time in brief, encyclopedia-style entries in an appendix at the end of The Return of the King, so there's quite a bit of space to toy with character development in that period.
Either way, it doesn’t sound like Mortensen is in any desperate hurry to don a Ranger’s gear again, though. The interviewer asked how often Mortenson finds himself broke with no job, and he replied “Lately, I’ve been lucky and it hasn’t for a while,” though he didn’t give any hints about what he might have in store next.
Moretenson’s 2023 film The Dead Don’t Hurt, which he opened the KVIFF festival with, received mostly favorable reviews upon release, though award season came and went with no nominations in sight.
If you missed Mortensen’s latest in theaters, you don’t have much longer to wait. The Dead Don’t Hurt’s streaming release date is July 14, 2024, on Prime Video.
