SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – A portion of Interstate 26 in Spartanburg County was closed while emergency crews responded to a tractor-trailer that hit a bridge.

According to officials, a tractor-trailer hit a bridge on Interstate 26 westbound at Mile Marker 19 Monday evening.

Chief Scott Garrett of the Westview-Fairforest Fire Department said the wreck happened when a tractor-trailer hauling a track loader had the bucket of the loader set too high, causing it to smack into the bridge when passing under it.

Garrett said the impact caused “significant damage” to the bridge. Officials on the scene also said some diesel fuel was spilled onto the interstate and a hazardous materials team was called to clean up the spill.

According to a statement released Monday night by the South Carolina Department of Transportation “the bridge sustained significant damage,” and the state is working to expedite the repair plan.

The fire department said the spilled fuel posed no danger to passing vehicles.

Officials said one lane of the I-26 westbound was closed. As of 7 a.m., Tuesday, all lanes are back open.

No injuries were reported during the crash.
