After selling 25 million copies and winning just about every Game of the Year award, FromSoftware had a lot to live up to when they finally released their first and only expansion for Elden Ring, Shadow of the Erdtree. It took over two years, but the wait is finally over, and as of this writing, five million people have ventured into the Land of Shadow, including myself. After exploring pretty thoroughly, and defeating every boss, I can safely say Shadow of the Erdtree is the best expansion FromSoftware has ever released in terms of scope and ambition. Some design choices still have me scratching my head and with so many high highs, the few lows do stand out.

The next mainline Resident Evil game is in development, game director Koshi Nakanishi confirmed Monday in a video streamed by Capcom. Nakanishi was the director of Resident Evil 7 biohazard and Resident Evil: Revelations, and also served as a designer on Resident Evil 5. In other words, Nakanishi’s games have both steered Resident Evil back toward its horror roots, while also trying to reinvent the franchise in important ways.

At this year’s Capcom Next digital showcase, the recently-announced Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster revealed its official release date, pre-order bonuses, and more information on what to expect in the new version of the game. The game is set to release digitally later this year on September 19, 2024 for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, with a physical edition planned for November.

With the remakes of the remasters of the reissues of the remakes, it does feel like there are always approximately 372 different Resident Evil games in development at any one time. However, brand new ones are a more rare treat, and that’s what was nonchalantly confirmed by Capcom last night. Resident Evil 9, although it almost definitely won’t be called that, is in the works, and it’s being directed by Resident Evil 7's Koshi Nakanishi.
