RUSTON, La. (KTVE/KARD)— According to the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office, in May 2024, the Lincoln Parish Detention Center staff discovered small amounts of synthetic marijuana and had issues with prisoners allegedly smoking in one of the inmate housing areas.
The illegal substance and activity going on in the facility led staff to believe that it was recently brought into the jail by an inmate. According to authorities, this led to a joint investigation by LPDC investigative staff and LPNET. During the investigation, a thorough review was conducted of inmate telephone calls and messages as well as surveillance video footage inside and outside of LPDC.
According to officers, it was discovered that an inmate allegedly placed a phone call to an outside source to request to have synthetic marijuana delivered to an area near the LPDC and hidden where it could be picked up by an outside trustee. Further investigation discovered that the day following the telephone call, an outside trustee concealed and brought suspected synthetic marijuana back into the jail with him after a work detail.
A video review of the events that followed revealed that multiple other inmates were allegedly involved in some form of criminal activity related to the introduction of possession of or use of synthetic marijuana. According to reports, numerous arrest warrants were obtained and the inmates were later charged for their involvement.
