ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – As the Fourth of July approaches, the first responders from St. Louis County came together to share important reminders about fireworks safety.

“Unfortunately, in St. Louis County, the fireworks are illegal. It’s illegal to discharge and possess them. Someone could find themselves receiving a citation because the fireworks are illegal,” Lt. David Bobo, Moline Acres Police Department, said.

With many new residents in the area, authorities are emphasizing the dangers of fireworks, the legal restrictions and the proper channels for reporting violations. Some residents were suprised about the rules.

“I wasn’t aware of this, so it is kind of shocking that it’s everywhere now. But usually, I end up winding down and watch them at the James E. Eagan since I live in that area,” Ashley Williamson, resident, said.

“I’m surprised, but I can see why because people are not really responsible in using them. It’s endangering other individuals,” Chris Dodson, resident, said.

If you are planning to put on a big fireworks show, the time has passed. Permits must be acquired 10 days prior to any planned display. Illegal fireworks can be reported to St. Louis County non-emergency number 636-529-8210.

“We encourage our residents in this north County area to try to find a place where the fireworks are being displayed to the public for free. It’s a lot safer, a lot more fun, and we want to make sure that at the end of the day, everyone has a good time on the Fourth of July,” Lt. Bobo said.

If you are looking to enjoy fireworks legally, join Florissant’s July 4 festivities, starting with the Northwinds concert band performance at 7:30 p.m. at James Eagan Civic Center. Shortly afterwards, the highly anticipated fireworks display starts at dusk.
