NFL analyst urges New York Giants to sign former All-Pro in free agency

The New York Giants don't have much salary-cap space to work with, but they have enough to make a slight move in free agency ahead of training camp.

With less than a month until the veterans report on July 24, the Giants still have time to make one final addition to the roster.

With their biggest need remaining in the secondary, Lorenzo Reyna of Pro Football Network suggested the Giants look into a former three-time All-Pro selection in Patrick Peterson.

"The New York Giants’ weakest area is the secondary. Especially cornerback, The eight-time Pro Bowler Peterson, though, would give this defense veteran help at either CB or even safety if brought in," Reyna wrote.

Peterson's days of providing single coverage on an island at an All-Pro level are behind him. However, the 34-year-old has been solid in recent seasons.

In 2023, Peterson lined up all over the secondary in Pittsburgh, logging snaps mostly at cornerback but seeing equal work in the slot and at free safety.

Though he allowed five touchdowns, he also allowed a solid 88.8 passer rating and 53.2% completion rate when targeted, according to Pro Football Focus.

The Giants currently have Deonte Banks and Cor'Dale Flott running as the starting tandem in the cornerback room, but adding a veteran presence like Peterson on a one-year deal may not be the worst idea.
