‘Jeopardy!’ viewers slam ‘freaky’ ad for spinoff show: ‘Hard pass’

“Jeopardy!” faced criticism after sharing a meme via its Instagram page, promoting its upcoming spinoff show, “Pop Culture Jeopardy!”
Known as the “ distracted boyfriend” stock photo from 2015, the image depicts a man, “You,” seemingly distracted by “Pop Culture Jeopardy!” and paying no attention to his girlfriend, symbolizing the original show, as she looks on disapprovingly.
“Finally, a show that’ll match your freak. Take the #PopCultureJeopardy! Anytime Test at the link in bio,” the caption reads.
“Match your freak” refers to the current TikTok trend inspired by the lyrics of Tinashe’s song “Nasty.”
The post didn’t sit well with some viewers of the long-running quiz show, known for its broad appeal that spans several generations.
“I didn’t know jeopardy was freaky,” one fan commented.

“#cringe,” another wrote.
“Which intern wrote that caption I just want to talk,” a third added.
A fan questioned the post, asking: “Is nothing sacred?”
Another critic commented, “No, thank you. Hard pass.”
“Pop Culture Jeopardy!” was announced in May as the first spinoff of the ABC game show created exclusively for a streaming service. It will be available on Prime Video.
The show will differ from the original, as contestants will answer questions about pop culture subjects like music, movies, sports, TV and more.
Ken Jennings (pictured) currently hosts the original “Jeopardy!” He took over after longtime host, Alex Trebek, taped his last show just 10 days before his death in 2020. Disney
Contestants will also form three teams of three and are expected to be “experts in categories from Alternative Rock to The Avengers; Broadway to MMA; [and] Gen Z to Zendaya,” according to the press release, as they compete in a tournament-style event, rather than individually.
The host and premiere date have not yet been announced for the new spinoff.
Trebek hosted the show for 37 seasons, since its syndicated debut in 1984. It has been airing since 1964.
When guest-hosting the show on the first episode after Trebek’s passing, Jennings, now 50, praised the legendary host.
“Let’s be totally clear. No one will ever replace the great Alex Trebek,” he said. “But we can honor him by playing the game he loved. Like all ‘Jeopardy!’ fans, I miss Alex very much, and I thank him for everything he did for all of us.”
