NORTHFIELD TWP. (WWJ) -- An investigation is underway in a rural area of Washtenaw County where an unidentified woman was found dead in a field.

According to Northfield Township Police, the body was found along Earhart Road between Six and Five Mile roads in eastern Northfield Township, which is northeast of Ann Arbor.

Investigators have been working with the Michigan State Police Crime Lab and Washtenaw County Medical Examiner's Office as they search for clues about what happened to the woman.

According to a tipster who called WWJ, neighbors in the area said the body appeared to have been there for some time before the disturbing discovery was made on Sunday.

While it's unclear at this time if this is in fact a homicide case, police said in a news release that "there us no evidence to suggest any danger or threats to residents of the Township at this time." It's unclear how police reached that conclusion.

Police did not say around how old the woman was, and no description was provided.

The Northfield PD added: "In maintaining the integrity of this investigation, no other information will be released at this time. As the investigation progresses, information that can be released will be shared with the public.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call D/Sgt. Roberts, Officer Guerrero or Lt. Powell at 734-449-9911. Tips can also be sent via email to robertsj@northfieldmi.gov, guerreroj@northfieldmi.gov, or powelld@northfieldmi.gov.
