A pet owner accused of filing dozens of fake insurance claims to steal $10,000 has been charged, according to the Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner’s Office.

The 38-year-old woman from Tennessee was arrested June 15 after authorities said she filed 38 phony invoices for pet medicine to her insurance company.

She was charged with pet insurance fraud and forgery, authorities said.

The ruse occurred about two years after her pet was last seen at an animal hospital in Cook County, Georgia, Commissioner John F. King said in a June 28 news release.

The hospital said it treated the pet from October 2019 until September 2020. In 2022, the woman submitted 38 bogus claims to the insurance company, according to King.

“In total, the suspect attempted to receive more than $10,000 in payments for false pet insurance claims,” he said in the release.

The woman remained in custody at the Cook County Jail as of June 28, authorities said. An updated inmate roster wasn’t available as of July 2.

Cook County is about a 200-mile drive southeast from Atlanta.
