(NEXSTAR) – For the last 135 years, the Eiffel Tower has been an iconic landmark, recognized around the world. This summer, it will serve as the backdrop for beach volleyball at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The tower was built by French engineer Gustave Eiffel. It took more than two years to build, and the metal framework alone weighs 7,300 tons. The Eiffel Tower was completed in 1889 and was considered the highlight at the World Exhibition in Paris.

“They mastered, you know, all the techniques regarding the steel and this engineer, Gustave Eiffel, was very, very important at this place. And you definitely, you cannot think about France without thinking about the Eiffel Tower,” French tour guide Fatah Nekhili said.

The Eiffel Tower remained the highest building in the world for 40 years, until the Empire State Building was built in New York City in 1931.

The world-famous landmark has been featured in plenty of movies from James Bond to “The Pink Panther.”

In June, Olympic rings were mounted onto the Eiffel Tower to mark 50 days until the start of the Games. The rings will be illuminated every night through the Paralympics.
