Tyreek Hill makes feelings clear on Jaylen Waddle now getting paid more than him

Tyreek Hill has had his say on the wave of new lucrative contracts his fellow NFL wide receivers have signed this summer.

Contract negotiations this offseason have brought a new market for wide receivers after Justin Jefferson signed the biggest non-quarterback contract in NFL history with Minnesota Vikings last month. The 24-year-old sealed a four-year $140 million extension having previously rejected a $28 million annual deal before the 2023 season started.

Just days before, Miami Dolphins signed Jaylen Waddle to a three-year extension worth almost $85 million, taking him into the list of the top five highest-paid wide receivers. Meanwhile, Dolphins’ teammate Hill is yet to cash in on the influx.

However, Hill is reportedly in contact with the Dolphins about his desire for revised terms amid the surge in the market for players in his position, especially within his own team. The 30-year-old appeared to remain in good spirits with him intrigued to see where he fits in with the new pay standards.

“I’m very excited just to be a part of the old wave, which was great, $30 million, and Justin Jefferson came in and surpassed that, man,” Hill said, via Aaron Wilson on KPRC. “So, very proud of those guys, happy for obviously my teammate Waddle getting his new deal. For guys like me, that’s great. I’m 30 years old, also looking for a new deal. So, very, very excited to see where I fit in that category. It’s amazing.”

Hill joined the Dolphins in 2022 after signing from the Kansas City Chiefs , who selected him as the 165th pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. His four-year $120m deal meant his $30m a year salary was at the top of the rankings among his position.

But in the last three months, he has seen three players surpass that mark. Hill is set to take home $19.665m in 2024, the last year with guaranteed money in his current contract. This could signal the perfect time for the five-time first-team All-Pro to secure a new deal and increase his compensation closer to the current standards of his positional rivals.

Despite all the talk about a new deal, Hill remains focused on his preseason preparations as the Dolphins eye a first Super Bowl since 1973. "Oh yeah, for sure, so very excited for it, man, but the real goal is to win the Super Bowl," Hill added. "It's cool to get paid and all that, but you know being able to win a Super Bowl and bring something special to the city of Miami, that's something that can live with us forever. I believe that's very monumental for all of us. Create greatness, man."
