As we get closer to the start of the NFL season, should the Los Angeles Chargers look to move on from star edge rusher Khalil Mack?

It was a very busy offseason for the Chargers this year, as they made some big changes that they hope will turn the franchise around. The decision to bring in Jim Harbaugh looks like a great one on paper considering his success with the San Francisco 49ers and at Michigan.

However, this was a roster that had some issues that needed to be addressed. The Chargers moved on from veterans Mike Williams and Keenan Allen on the offensive side of the ball.

While those were some big changes, the Chargers elected to keep some of their star veterans on the defensive side of the ball.

    That includes Mack.

Recently, Bleacher Report spoke about why the Chargers should trade Mack before the season starts.

Here’s what they had to say.

Mack was highly productive last season, racking up 17 sacks and 71 pressures, per Sports Info Solutions. However, he was nowhere to be found in ESPN’s top 20 in pass rush win rate on the edge.

At 33 years old, Mack is reminiscent of Robert Quinn in 2021. The veteran pass-rusher had 18.5 sacks in age-31 season on a Bears team that went 6-11. Rather than trade him to a contender in the offseason, they brought him back and ended up trading him to the Philadelphia Eagles for a fourth-round pick.

He ended up with just one sack as he fell off the age cliff.

The Chargers are in a very interesting spot. The addition of Harbaugh should help the team, but this roster isn’t as talented as it has been in recent years. However, with Justin Herbert under center with Harbaugh running the show, Los Angeles can win games.

While the Chargers might be able to be around .500 with good coaching and a talented quarterback, this isn’t a Super Bowl contender as of now. If the team decides to move on from Mack, it wouldn’t be a signal that it is completely rebuilding, but that it is retooling.

Mack did rack up a career-high 17 sacks in 2023, but he is 33 years old and a decline could be on the horizon. Since the Chargers aren’t contenders, moving on from him now while he still has value makes sense.

As the offseason rolls on and perhaps into the regular season, keep an eye on Mack as a name that could be moved at some point this year.
