COLUMBUS, Ohio (WDTN) — Governor DeWine and Ohio Department of Transportation Director Jack Marchbanks announced a large investment into school safety programs throughout Ohio.

The funding arrives from ODOT’s Safe Routes to School program , which has provided over $83 million to these causes since its inception 19 years ago.

This time around more than $8 million is set to be invested into 29 programs throughout 19 counties, including Montgomery, Butler and Mercer counties.

Each project centers around children’s safety when walking or biking to school.

“It is our responsibility to give this next generation safer infrastructure to enjoy these modes of transportation,” ODOT Director Jack Marchbanks said in a press release.

The projects will ensure that the following areas are at maximum efficiency and effectiveness:

    • Sidewalks
    • Light poles
    • Crosswalks
    • Flashing beacons
    • Curb ramps
    • Educational materials
