With the Fourth of July just days away, officials from the Virginia Department of Fire Programs are reminding people about the importance of fireworks safety.

There were eight fatal incidents involving fireworks in the nation last year, including one in Virginia. A total of about 9,700 injuries nationally also were attributed to fireworks incidents.

“Misuse of fireworks can be deadly,” said Virginia State Fire Marshal Billy Hux. “Opt for safety this holiday by enjoying fireworks at a professionally organized show.”

In general, any firework that explodes, moves on the ground or in the air, or shoots a projectile is illegal in Virginia. Only “permissible fireworks,” as defined in the Code of Virginia, can be legally sold, possessed, or used within the commonwealth, but many individual localities – including Henrico – also prohibit their use.

Violators can be charged with a class I misdemeanor and face a fine of up to $2,500 and/or up to one year in jail.
