COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) — In honor of National Ice Cream Month, Ohio is inviting ice cream lovers to enjoy the sweet treat from the state’s local makers.
In honor of the July celebration, TourismOhio has added more stops to its Ohio Ice Cream Trail, according to a news release. From family shops to national chains, the list of shops to indulge in Ohio-made ice creams has grown from 15 to 54 in just six years. Fans of indulgent frozen dessert can find an outlet close to home or while traveling around the state.
“Wherever your Ohio adventure leads, a scoop of Made in Ohio ice cream is the ultimate cherry on top of an unforgettable summer,” said state tourism director Sarah Wickham. “Our goal in expanding the Ohio Ice Cream Trail was to highlight the vast diversity of Ohio’s ice cream offerings.”
Two of the locations are in Southeastern Ohio – Whit’s Frozen Custard in Athens and The Shakery in Ironton.
Representing both large cities and small towns, seven locations can be found in central Ohio, including Dell’s, Johnson’s, Jeni’s, Velvet, Jer-Zee Drive-In, Eda’s Italian Ice and Gelato and Round Hill Dairy.
Velvet Ice Cream, with its corporate headquarters and visitors’ center located in a historic site called “Ye Olde Mill” in Utica, has been on the list since it began in 2018.
“We are incredibly excited and honored to be a part of Ohio’s Ice Cream Trail,” said Luconda, Joanne and Joe Dager, fourth-generation owners and operators of Velvet Ice Cream. “Ye Olde Mill is a cherished part of our history being our home since 1960, and we look forward to welcoming visitors from across the state to our historic grounds to experience our rich heritage and delicious ice cream.”
A notable stop in Fairview Park near Cleveland is Weber’s Premium Vintage Ice Cream which boasts antique production machines. Other tour highlights include Kirke’s Homemade Ice Cream in St. Clairsville where customers are asked to order their ice cream in ounces instead of scoops and Jubie’s near Dayton in Fairborn which serves fun flavors like Blueberry Muffin, Cotton Candy, and “superhero-inspired” treats.
