Rashawn Slater has established himself as one of the top tackles in the league, and he is due for a big payday for his services.

The Chargers picked up Slater’s fifth-year option, keeping him under contract through 2025. But for a player of his caliber, it’s better to give him the money he deserves sooner rather than later.

That’s why The Athletic’s Daniel Popper named Slater the team’s No. 1 contract situation worth monitoring.

Slater is an elite tackle, and the price for that position is only going up. Lions right tackle Penei Sewell, drafted six spots ahead of Slater in the first round in 2021, signed for $28 million in average annual value earlier this offseason. The smart approach is always signing good players early. Will the Chargers wait to see Slater play in the new offense under Jim Harbaugh before committing long-term?

Slater made a name for himself in his rookie season, earning All-Pro recognition. His sophomore season was cut short by a torn biceps injury. Slater returned to the field and started all regular-season games in 2023. He allowed just three sacks and 38 pressures on 726 pass-block snaps.

Entering his fourth season, Slater will be the staple of the Chargers’ offensive line, which will be a focal point as they look to build an efficient rushing attack.

At the end of the day, it’s imperative that they give him what he’s worth to keep him around for the long haul. Now, it’s just a matter of when.
