Join the Chequamegon Chapter of the North Country Trail Association on guided hikes on the North Country National Scenic Trail in the Bay Area.

The group will be offering several hikes with varied terrain and features in the Chequamegon National Forest and other NCTA Chapter’s sections of trail in the region.

Participants should dress for the weather and bugs, wear a hat, bring bug repellant (perhaps a bug head net), water, lunch and a snack.

Hikes are free and open to the public.

    Hike schedule

    • Hike One: July 3— 10 a.m. with leader Don Quick

This out-and-back hike will start at the Reynard Lake trailhead and go two miles north into the Rainbow Lake Wilderness. It will feature Reynard Lake, a campsite/picnic area on the north end of Reynard Lake, several new reroutes and Bufo Lake. After returning, participants who want a longer hike will have an opportunity to do a 1.5 mile out-and-back hike south to Nelson Lake. Participants will meet at the Reynard Lake Road parking site (46.388399, -91.283694). The alternate date is July 5.

Hike Two: July 24—9:30 a.m. with leaders Clair Morud and Mel Baughman

This is a six-mile out-and-back hike that features Wren Falls, the Bill Thomas Memorial Bridge, a scenic overlook, the site of an abandoned mine and a couple backpacker campsites. Participants will leave a car at the Casey Sag Road trailhead so those who want a shorter hike (about 3.5 miles) have a way back to Wren Falls.

Participants will meet at the parking area for Wren Falls. The parking area is at the end of a 1.4-mile gravel road accessible from Vogues Road off Highway 169 or Casey Sag Road off Highway 77. The intersection of Vogues Road and Casey Sag Road is the start of the 1.4-mile road to Wren Falls (46.4134541, -90.5107097), and there should be a sign for the falls. The alternate date is July 25th.

Hike Three: Aug. 14— 9:30 a.m. with leaders Don Quick and Katie LeMoine

This is a great opportunity to preview the Canthook Lake reroute which will reroute the NCT around a dry section of the trail and past five lakes. Participants will meet at the Rainbow Lake Wilderness trailhead on West Delta Road (FR 228) (46.44647, -91.34034). FR 228 is accessible from Scenic Drive or Reynard Lake Road. Hikers will be shuttled to Musky Lake Road to start the hike. The hike is about 5 miles, but the duration of the hike is difficult to predict because some bushwacking is involved. This is not a good hike for people with mobility impairments. The alternate date is Aug. 15th.

Hike Four: Aug. 28— 10 a.m. with leaders Bob Lind and Marty Swank

This is a 2.5-mile loop hike that features Porcupine Creek, Porcupine Lake, 18-Mile Spring Pond and some interesting bridges. It would not be a good choice for people with mobility impairments. Hikers will meet at the Porcupine Lake close access connector trail parking (46.296280, -91.159040). Please note that there are two trailheads on Porcupine Lake Road to the west of the trailhead where participants will meet. The alternate date is Aug. 29th.

Hike five: Sept. 11— 10 a.m. with Leader Kevin Schram

This hike is actually two out-and-back hikes, one about 2.8 miles and the other about 1.6 miles. Both hikes start and end in the parking area for the Penokee Ski Trails. There is a little bushwacking involved, so this hike might be difficult for people with mobility impairments, Hikers will have an opportunity to view two large beaver lodges and see the impact these busy colonies have on the landscape. The trailhead is well-marked and located off Highway GG, west of Mellen and north of Clam Lake (46.3146, -90.7179).
