New York Giants GM Boldly Explains His Belief In Daniel Jones

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is under immense pressure heading into the 2024 NFL campaign.

The Giants signed Jones to a four-year, $160 million contract extension in March 2023 after the signal-caller enjoyed a very impressive 2022 season.

However, the first year of Jones’ deal did not exactly go very well, as he threw two touchdowns and six interceptions in six games before tearing his ACL.

This led many to believe that New York would move away from Jones and select another quarterback with the sixth overall pick in the NFL Draft this past April, but instead, the Giants opted to take wide receiver Malik Nabers and roll with Jones for at least one more year.

HBO’s Hard Knocks revealed a scene with New York general manager Joe Schoen explaining why he still believes in Jones heading into 2024.

Schoen actually makes some salient points.

Jones really did not have much help at all last season. The offensive line was terrible and plagued with injuries, he didn’t have many options in the aerial attack and running back Saquon Barkley missed several games due to a high-ankle sprain.

Does it entirely excuse Jones’ poor play? No, but there is something to be said for the fact that the 27-year-old has never had a No. 1 wide receiver since entering the league in 2019.

Will things be different for Daniel Jones in 2024?

By drafting Nabers, the Giants have finally supplied Jones with the top talent he needs at wide out. New York also addressed its offensive line this offseason, and while it is still lacking, it should certainly be better than it was in 2023.

Here’s the deal with Jones: the 2024 campaign is the last guaranteed year of his contract. So, if things don’t work out for Jones this coming season, Big Blue can cut him loose.

Remember: the Giants did try to trade up for Drake Maye, who ultimately went third overall to the New England Patriots. Ergo, it’s not like New York is married to the idea of Jones for the future.

That being said, we do need to consider how well Jones played two years ago, leading the Giants to a playoff berth and a surprising Wild Card Round win over the Minnesota Vikings.

All of that came with Jones getting very little help from anyone outside of Barkley, who, of course, signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency this past March.

We’ll see if Daniel Jones can rebound in 2024.
