Chargers’ Jim Harbaugh Doesn’t Hold Back About Justin Herbert

The Los Angeles Chargers are looking to change their culture around young star quarterback Justin Herbert, and they have brought in Jim Harbaugh as their head coach to do that.

Harbaugh, who just won the National Championship at Michigan, has proven to have success in both the college game and in the NFL. Harbaugh had a 49-22-1 record as the San Francisco 49ers head coach, leading them to three straight NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl appearance.

Having a proven winner to transform the culture, the Chargers should get the most out of Herbert and his teammates this season.

Herbert has been the bright spot for Los Angeles in his first four seasons. The 26-year-old completed 65.1 percent of his passes for 3,134 yards, 20 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 2023.

The start quarterback only appeared in 13 games last season, as he suffered a fractured right index finger in Week 14.

Herbert has showcased that he is one of the most talented signal-callers in football. With Harbaugh as the head coach, Herbert’s full potential could be unlocked.

    Harbaugh’s awe of Herbert

In an interview with Jahleel Addae and Jim Hill, Harbaugh stated , “He’s gonna get mad at me… (but) there’s not a gene in his body I wouldn’t trade with.” Harbaugh also described Herbert as “incredible.”

While this comment by Harbaugh shows some humor, it also shows praise for his quarterback, who is extremely talented.

Harbaugh hired Greg Roman, the former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator, as the Chargers’ new offensive coordinator. Roman coached under Jim Harbaugh’s brother, John, with the Ravens.

There’s familiarity with the two, which should help them be on the same page with their scheme.

Harbaugh and Roman have both utilized run-heavy schemes, which will be an adjustment for Herbert. However, it could pay major dividends.

A strong rushing attack will open up more play action and run pass option plays for Herbert and the offense.

The Chargers’ front office has made the personnel changes to fit this new scheme.

They lost running back Austin Ekeler in free agency, who is more known for his pass-catching ability. They replaced Ekeler with Gus Edwards and JK Dobbins, two physical backs. Roman is also familiar with these running backs as he was their offensive coordinator with the Ravens.

With the familiarity between Harbaugh and Roman, as well as Roman’s connection with the backfield, the Chargers are in a good position to create a strong rushing attack.

Justin Herbert could have his full potential unlocked with an elite coach in Jim Harbaugh.
