Drive or ride train up Pikes Peak for rare sunrise opening

It's not often one can catch the sunrise atop Pikes Peak via road or railway.

That chance is coming up July 21.

Pikes Peak Highway's gateway will open at 4:30 a.m. that Sunday. A ride on The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway is set to depart at that time as well.

The occasional sunrise openings have been a years-long tradition for the highway, while the cog railway is returning an experience that debuted in 2023.

It's a chance to witness a "magical moment," the railway's manager, Ted Johnston, said in a news release. “It’s a wonderful way to experience the morning beauty of Colorado in an accessible way.”

Fares are required for each entry.

Along with a $2 timed-entry permit purchased online, Pikes Peak Highway charges per-person fees of $15 for adults (16 and older) and $5 for youth (ages 6-15). Train tickets are $99 per person.

Pikes Peak Highway's announcement noted doughnuts, coffee and hot chocolate to be offered at the summit. The notice also reminded of the time it takes to drive to the top, about 45 minutes, and the event is dependent on the weather. The event's last entry will be 6:30 a.m.

After July 21, the next sunrise opening scheduled for the highway and cog railway is Aug. 1.
