ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Carter County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate at the county’s detention center.

According to the sheriff’s office, an officer was conducting life safety checks in a men’s housing block shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday when an inmate told him that his cellmate would not wake up.

The officer reportedly entered the cell and found the inmate sitting in the floor unresponsive.

After finding no pulse, the officer called for medical assistance and began administering CPR until EMS arrived and transported the inmate to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the sheriff’s office.

The inmate’s cause of death remains under investigation but the sheriff’s office said there is no indication of foul play.

The name of the inmate was not released.

The sheriff’s office notified the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation of the inmate’s death.
