UPDATE: Jontay Porter To Be Charged With Felony After Receiving Lifetime NBA Ban

Jontay Porter, a former player for the Toronto Raptors, is now facing felony charges related to his involvement in a sports betting scandal that resulted in him being banned from the NBA, according to The Associated Press.

On Tuesday, federal prosecutors in Brooklyn identified Jontay Porter in a criminal information sheet, suggesting that he may soon face federal charges. Additionally, Canadian authorities have initiated a criminal investigation into Porter as well.

According to the report, the document does not detail the specific charges against Jontay Porter or provide information about his court appearance date. However, it does indicate that Porter’s case is linked to an ongoing investigation involving four individuals who were charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud in connection to Porter’s scandal. These four men have not yet entered pleas in their case.

As we previously reported, after an investigation, the NBA found out Porter “disclosed confidential information to sports bettors, limiting his own participation in one or more games for betting purposes, and betting on NBA games.”

In a statement released by NBA commissioner Adam Silver he stated, “There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams and everyone associated with our sport, which is why Jontay Porter’s blatant violations of our gaming rules are being met with the most severe punishment.” He added, “while legal sports betting creates transparency that helps identify suspicious or abnormal activity, this matter also raises important issues about the sufficiency of the regulatory framework currently in place, including the types of bets offered on our games and players. Working closely with all relevant stakeholders across the industry, we will continue to work diligently to safeguard our league and game.”
