A Tennesee man was arrested and charged after EMS workers pulled his wife out of their burning home with a knife stuck in her chest - luckily saving a mother-of-two who had been stabbed and set on fire.

Zachary Mowel, 28, had brutally beat his wife , punching her 'over 30 times' in the face, before he grabbed a knife from the kitchen and began stabbing her.

But after puncturing her in the back and torso, Mowel grabbed gasoline and doused the woman, who was bleeding out, and set her on fire as their two children watched. Miraculously, Tessa Mowel survived.

She "has 9 stab wounds, all her ribs are broken, collapsed lung, her entire right leg has severe 3rd-degree burns, and she is also paralyzed from the waist down," according to her sister, who set up a GoFundMe to aid the recovery.

The sister says that "this all happened with their 5-year-old and 8-year-old boys watching and pleading for their dad not to kill their mom." The children are now in her custody and recovering from what they saw that horrific night.

Their father, now in jail, admitted to police instantly, telling them "I did it" as soon as they came to arrest him. "It was me," he told officers, after an investigation turned up that he was the one who set the house on fire before horrifically attacking his wife. He is currently being detained on $765,000 bond in the Dickson County Jail.

When police arrived and found Tessa Mowel near the back door of the burning and smoky residence, a knife was still lodged in her body, according to court documents obtained by Nashville-based ABC affiliate WKRN .

The signs of abuse and potential homicide are still hard to miss, despite the fact that 70 percent of all femicide cases in high-income countries happen in the U.S. Some 47,000 women and girls worldwide were killed by their intimate partners or other family members in 2020, the most recent year that data is available by the UN.

Globally, intimate partners are responsible for as many as 38 percent of all murders of women, found the WHO. While Mowel got lucky to be rescued, too many women do not survive their attackers.

"Please if you can my entire family would appreciate any help. [H]er and her boys did not deserve this torture," wrote the woman's sister.
