PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) – Ahead of excessive heat warnings taking place in many areas across Oregon over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek is reminding Oregonians to take extra precautions to stay safe.

The governor’s office said the excessive heat warnings are expected to begin 12 p.m. Thursday through Sunday evening.

“Oregon will experience record-breaking heat across the state this holiday week,” Gov. Kotek said. “While extreme heat can be deadly for anyone, certain groups – children, elders, people with disabilities, and people who work outside – face additional risk. Also, remember to check on your neighbors, especially those who might not have access to air conditioning.”

She added, “High heat can also be a catalyst for wildfires. I strongly urge all Oregonians to practice extreme caution this weekend, stay cool, and take preventive measures to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires.”

The governor’s office said near record-breaking temperatures are expected around Oregon, with the Portland metro area, Willamette Valley, and parts of Southern Oregon anticipated to reach triple-digit temps.

Ahead of the forecasted triple-digit heat, the governor’s office said the Oregon Department of Emergency Management has activated the state Emergency Coordination Center in response to the heatwave and several counties are opening cooling centers around the state.

Oregonians can find information on cooling centers online or by calling 2-1-1. Community members can also sign up for OR-alert to receive emergency notifications.

The Oregon Health Authority is also urging Oregonians to take steps to avoid heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
