MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — Crews with the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) responded to a two-car crash early Thursday morning.

The crash happened at about 4 a.m. on Southbound I-270 in the area of Montrose Road. There, two cars collided into jersey walls, one of which then caught on fire.

Pete Piringer, a spokesman for MCFRS, said one of the vehicles became “fully-involved” in flames. The driver of that car fled the scene.

EMS crews evaluated three other people from the second car, all of whom had non-life-threatening injuries.

Piringer noted that “multiple packages of fireworks were discovered and encountered on scene.” Officials confiscated two leaf bags full of fireworks, estimated to be worth around $500.

He confirmed that the fireworks were not in the car that caught fire but in the second car involved. None of the fireworks caught fire.

That area of I-270 was closed to traffic as of 4:50 a.m.
