Happy 4th of July! Thunderstorms and downpours today, but tonight looks dry

Independence Day is the day Mother Nature has decided to listen to our pleas for rain. A few clouds filter in for the morning but we look to stay relatively dry for morning parades and festivities after pre-dawn sprinkles move away. By midday, with highs in the upper 80s, heat and humidity with an approaching front spark a few showers and even a rumble of thunder.
Our cold front is expected to cross in the late afternoon and evening with scattered thunderstorms and heavy rain. From about 3pm – 7pm will be our best chance of strong storms with bursts of downpours. With drought conditions present, our ground is hard and compact which will lead to localized street flooding during these downpours. By 9pm, we’ll see showers and storms move east and away just in time for some firework displays planned for tonight. Just don’t forget the lawn chairs as the ground will certainly be soggy.
For the isolated strong to severe storm chance, damaging winds remains the top concern and street flooding. Stay in the know, even on the go, with the StormTracker 59 app!
Friday morning we’re starting dry with sun & clouds. Humidity values already oppressive out the door for the air you can wear feel. The dry time helps temps push into the upper 80s. Scattered showers and pop-up t-storms likely into the afternoon as another cold front crosses. A few will escape the rain but it’ll be a good day to keep an eye to the sky for those with outdoor plans.
Saturday a few morning showers likely as our Friday system continues to push out of the region. Highs take a small hit dropping back into the low to mid 80s but it’ll be muggy regardless. Afternoon rumbles likely in a scattered fashion again making Saturday a good day to keep an hear out for thunder. We’ll clear up some into the overnight.
Sunday is a little drier over Saturday with a mix of sun and clouds. Temps manage to push the mid and upper 80s with extra humidity. Overall, a nice way to end the holiday weekend.
Monday sun and clouds and southwest winds keep temps moving up into the upper 80s by the evening. An afternoon shower here or there is expected thanks to the heating of the day and extra humidity as a little disturbance works through. Isolated showers remain possible into the overnight.
Tuesday we’ll manage to warm up into the 80s once again with a mix of sun and clouds. An afternoon downpour & rumble of thunder also possible with the summer pattern holding for another day.
In Your Extended Forecast we’ll finally start to break the dry spell with the summer heat and humidity induced pop-up thunderstorms. It doesn’t look like enough rain to bring our rivers back to seasonal average heights but it’ll certainly help bring them up from near historic lows like the Greenbrier River at Renick currently showing zero feet height on the river gauge.
