MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — Over 60 firefighters with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) responded to a two-story house fire late Wednesday night.

The fire happened in a two-story single-family home just before 10:30 p.m. in the area of Layhill Road and Norbeck Road. The home was vacant at the time of the fire, Pete Piringer, a spokesman for MCFRS, noted.

Piringer said that fire was showing on the first and second floors of the home, extending to the attic and roof area.

The bulk of the fire was knocked down by about 11 p.m.

In an update made Thursday morning, Piringer said the fire caused part of the second floor to collapse onto the first, making the building unsafe and difficult to examine for fire investigators. It was not believed the cause of the fire was criminal, however.

Piringer said the fire caused about $175,000 in damages. No one was hurt.
