The San Francisco 49ers have taken full advantage of the quarterback situation they fell into with Brock Purdy. It was only two years ago that Trey Lance, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, was thought of as the face of the franchise.
Lance lasted six quarters before suffering a season-ending injury. Veteran Jimmy Garoppolo stepped into the starting lineup in his place but eventually suffered a season-ending injury as his own.
That thrust Brock Purdy into the starting lineup and the rest is history. The last pick of the 2021 NFL Draft has taken the reins of this offense and produced at a very high level.
Through 25 games, with 21 starts, the 49ers have gone 17-4 with Brock Purdy under center. His stats have been incredibly productive, as he has set several records through his first two seasons in the NFL.
He has completed 68.7 percent of his passes for 6,554 yards and 44 touchdowns with only 15 interceptions. In 2023, he led the NFL in touchdown passing percentage, passer rating and QBR, finishing fourth in the MVP race.
Given how well he has played, it should come as no surprise that Brock Purdy landed on the 33rd Team’s Top 25 Under 25 rankings. Jeff Diamond is high on the Iowa State product, who came in at No. 6 on his list.
“Mr. Irrelevant,” as the last pick in the 2022 draft, has quickly established himself as plenty relevant after winning his first seven starts (including two playoff games before his elbow injury) in his rookie season and following it up with a tremendous 2023 season.
Brock Purdy led the league in passer rating (113.0) with 4,280 passing yards and 31 touchdowns. He directed the San Francisco 49ers to the NFC West title and then the Super Bowl before falling to the Chiefs in overtime. He showed good running ability on top of his passing skill in a Pro Bowl season.
A big payday awaits Purdy if he continues at his current pace,” Diamond wrote .
The looming contract extension for Brock Purdy is going to be franchise-altering for the 49ers. To this point, they have taken full advantage of his contract situation, spending lavishly elsewhere on the roster.
San Francisco has the most talented team in the NFL and it has paid off. In the two seasons with Brock Purdy under center, the team has advanced to the NFC Championship Game.
Repeating that success, however, will become challenging. 49ers general manager John Lynch will have some very difficult decisions to make as the team’s roster is very expensive and will only get pricier with an extension for their starting quarterback
Given the booming quarterback market, the 49ers are going to have to pay Brock Purdy a pretty penny. But, if he continues producing at this level, San Francisco will give him whatever he wants as a top quarterback in the NFL.
