CABELL/LINCOLN COUNTIES, WV (WOWK) – Inaccurate information on a permit led to two tractor-trailers getting stuck on a road they never should have been on, according to the West Virginia Department of Transportation.

On Monday night and Tuesday afternoon, a pair of tractor-trailers were hauling steel beams for the Poker Hollow Bridge construction project on Route 10 in Lincoln County. While traveling down Route 10 in Cabell County, they got stuck in a turn on Route 10 , causing major traffic delays.

Joe Pack, Chief Engineer of District Operations, and Rob Pennington, District 2 Engineer, say those beams were 125 feet long, however, the curve where they got stuck is only able to accommodate loads with a maximum length of 110 feet. According to Pack and Pennington, the companies hauling the beams “provided incorrect information on an oversize load permit.”

They say had the DOH and DOT been given the correct information, the permit would not have been approved.

The trucks that got stuck in the curve were the second and third out of four loads. According to the DOH, the first semi had a steerable rear axle on the trailer, which made it able to negotiate the turn successfully. The two that got stuck did not have the steerable rear axles. The fourth truck made it through the turn successfully. The DOH did not say whether that truck had the steerable rear axles.

The DOH says they have reached out to the contractor, Turman Morton Inc., in order to make sure there would me bo further issues with trucks delivering steel beams to the project site. Pack and Pennington also say the DOH is reviewing the permits to decide “what further action may be possible.”
