    Forecast: Storm Chances This Weekend

    By Jason Parkin,

Storms will continue to move out of northern Iowa into northeast Iowa this evening, and we’ll get a break from the rain until Friday afternoon. There will still be enough cold air aloft late Friday afternoon into the early evening to kick off a few isolated storms. Don’t cancel outdoor plans for these… if you get rain it won’t last long.

A dry period follows Friday night into early Saturday afternoon, then a trough of low pressure moves across Iowa and kicks off scattered storms Saturday evening that will linger in southern Iowa into Sunday morning. Following that, a cold front drops through Sunday evening into Monday morning, giving us yet another chance for scattered storms.

The three images below show us predicted rainfall totals. The first, from the European computer model, takes us through Monday morning. The next two outlooks take us through the next 5 and 7 days. It doesn’t appear that predicted rainfall will produce any additional areas of river flooding over Iowa, though it may prolong existing flooding in spots. Note, in the last image, the heavy rain coming into southern Texas as Hurricane Beryl moves north.

Highs for the next series of days follow, along with extended outlooks. It appears we may finally see some dryer conditions as we get into the middle part of July.
