( KRON ) — A coyote pup that was visibly struggling in San Mateo County was rescued by firefighters Thursday morning, according to Cal Fire.

San Mateo County firefighters at Station 17 in San Mateo had previously watched the pup running around with its mother, Cal Fire said, but on Thursday morning the mom was nowhere in sight. The fire crew noticed that pup was disoriented and was stumbling around.

After offering the young canine some chicken and water, the firefighters were visited by the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA for rescue. According to Peninsula Humane, the pup was malnourished and dehydrated.
