Former NFL player Daniel Muir was recruited to join the extreme religious group Straitway Truth Ministries alongside his wife before their arrest.
Daniel Muir, 40, has been charged with domestic battery and obstruction of justice, with his wife Kristin Muir, 38, charged with obstruction. The couple were arrested following a police search of their home found their 14-year-old son, Bryson, who was reported missing almost three weeks ago.
Authorities in Tennessee investigated what some are calling a “cult” lifestyle followed by Muir and his wife after they were reported to have been recruited to Straitway by Muir’s former Green Bay Packers teammate Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila .
According to a Sports Illustrated article published in 2020, Gbaja-Biamila began sending videos of Straitway leader Pastor Charles Dowell to Muir. This prompted him to look through Bible scriptures in an attempt to prove their teachings wrong, only to find himself agreeing with his interpretations. It’s claimed that Muir then met former Indianapolis Colts teammate Robert Mathis before being introduced to Straitway and confirming their association with this group.

Muir’s home in Logansport, Indiana, is listed to be owned by a religious organization linked directly to the Straitway church, The Servant Leader’s Foundation. The estate called “Straitway Goshen” names Muir by the title “Pastor,” and the former defensive lineman is listed as the contact and leader of Straitway’s Indiana location.
His wife Kristin and their three sons have all followed him to the church and have changed their lives according to Straitway’s promotion of a separate life from mainstream society. It’s said that Kristin stopped wearing makeup, began wearing a head covering and sold her Louis Vuitton and Gucci purses and wallets on Facebook as part of Straitway’s teachings to live simply and save money.
Headquartered in Tennessee, Straitway has chapters around the country with Gbaja-Biamila heading up a Wisconsin extension – Straitway Praiseland. His association was spotlighted when he sent two armed members to a Christmas pageant at his children’s school, leading to the members’ arrests for trespassing and carrying concealed weapons, with Gbaja-Biamila getting caught up in the legal issues.
Muir now finds himself in legal trouble after failed attempts to contact the family led to Indiana State Police alerting the public about Bryson’s disappearance, issuing a Silver Alert for the teenager and categorizing him as “missing and endangered”.
A search was underway with Bryson said to have had injuries to his face when police were alerted to the situation by Kristin’s mother Cheryl Wright, who called the police to report “her grandson was being abused”. Eventually, Bryson was found on Wednesday and both Daniel and his wife have been taken into custody where they have been held without bond and are under a no-contact order with their son.
