ROANOKE, Va. ( WFXR ) — Hot and humid conditions will impact Southwest and Central Virginia on Friday. Showers and storms are possible during the afternoon and evening.

For Friday, Heat Advisories will go into effect from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. for counties along and east of the Blue Ridge. Highs will be in the upper 80s and 90s. Due to the hot temperatures and high humidity levels, heat index values up to 109 are possible.

When dealing with hot weather, here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

    • If you plan on working or exercising outside, try to do so during the morning or evening when temperatures aren’t as hot
    • Take frequent breaks when working outside
    • Drink plenty of water
    • Stay in the shade when you can
    • Consider wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothes

Scattered showers and storms will have the chance to move through around midday and into the evening. The moist air will allow downpours to occur, so localized flooding is a concern. A few strong to severe thunderstorms may produce gusty winds.

Overall, the hot and unsettled weather pattern will continue into the weekend. On Saturday, there is a greater potential for afternoon showers and storms east of the Blue Ridge. Afternoon temperatures will rise into the 80s and lower 90s.

For Sunday, a few isolated showers and storms are possible south of U.S. 460. Otherwise, a mix of sun and clouds will be overhead as temperatures warm into the upper 80s and lower 90s.

As of 5:00 a.m. on Friday, Beryl is a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of up to 110 mph. The storm is expected to impact the Yucatan Peninsula during the day, bringing strong winds and storm surge. Beryl should start to weaken as it moves inland. However, it could strengthen into a hurricane as it moves over the Gulf of Mexico. It may impact parts of Texas by the beginning of next week.
