Richard Hughes' explanation for Arne Slot appointment will be music to ears of Liverpool fans

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes has explained why the club chose to appoint Arne Slot as Jurgen Klopp's successor. The Dutchman's 'front-foot' approach was one of the key reasons, with Slot also commenting on his early impressions of the team.

Since Klopp announced back in January that the 2023/24 campaign would be his final one in charge of the Reds, several names were linked with the top job on Merseyside. Despite strong links to Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, it is the former Feyenoord boss who will now lead Liverpool into a new era.

Many fans and pundits have drawn similarities between Slot's Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar teams and Klopp's Liverpool . The relentless pressing, attacking football and general passion surrounding the club are all reminiscent of the previous regime - and played a major role in the decision-making of Hughes.

"That philosophy and playing style that attracted us to Arne is subjective and is based on football opinion, and data. On all the metrics, his Feyenoord team came out really well," Hughes said when asked about why the club chose Slot.

"The way they played, with a real front-foot attacking approach, with intelligence and passion. They are attributes we welcome here and lends well with the current squad we have, our supporters and the football club.

"This way of playing that Arne has been successful with is the most attractive to watch, in my opinion. I believe it will be so with the fans too and that is the most important thing.

"There is a duty here to play that kind of football and grab games by the scruff of the neck. It is not going to be a completely different approach."

Slot then answered the question and what he would bring to the club, where he added: "I have worked at a really special club at Feyenoord. When Liverpool comes along, it is one of the clubs I leave Feyenoord for.

"Richard wanted Liverpool to bring me in. Since then, I've noticed how professional this club. To get to know the reasons why they want you. We were lucky to win a few things.

"To convince me, they have to like my playing style. He really knew a lot. This is something you want to hear. It has to be more than trophies."

Liverpool.com says: The similar styles between Slot and Klopp will help ease the transitionary period - both on and off the field. While the results and what the team are used to are important, it should also help endear himself to the fanbase in the same way that Klopp did.
