    AODA Family Educational Series starts this month

    MARINETTE — Marinette County Health and Human Services — ADAPT announces the next AODA (Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse) Family Educational Series open to the public. This series is developed to address the growing concerns in our community related to the devastating impact that substance use has had on individuals, families, and the economic prosperity of our community.

    The AODA Family Educational Series has been developed to address three important issues associated with substance use: prevention, intervention, and treatment. This program can be used as an adjunct to young people who have been cited for underage drinking, substance use, violations in school, family members who are concerned about a loved one’s substance use, individuals who are struggling with their own substance use, or treatment professionals who are looking for resources to help educate their clients about the dynamics of this life-threatening disease.

    This series is also for medical and behavioral health professionals interested in learning more about the dynamics of Substance Use Disorders.

    This series will begin on July 8 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and will run through Aug. 19, (no meeting on July 29) for a total of six weeks. All sessions will be held in the basement conference room at 2500 Hall Ave., Marinette,. No one under 18 years of age will be allowed without parents or legal guardian. It is strongly recommended that all family members attend, excluding children under the age of 12.

    All participants will need to call Marinette County Health and Human Services — ADAPT at (715) 732-7760 or 1-888-732-7549 and reserve how many participants will be attending. Space will be limited and available on a first come basis. There will be no cost to the participants.

    Participants will be expected to attend all six sessions to be considered eligible for Certificate of Completion. For more information, people can call one of the numbers listed above.

    AODA FAMILY EDUCATION SERIES

    Monday Nights

    • Session 1: July 8, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

    Disease Concept of Substance Dependence

    This session develops a model of understanding to help participants better understand the dynamics of this devastating illness. Differences between addiction and dependence are made in order to better understand the myths and misconceptions about this disease.

    • Session 2: July 15, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

    Progression of Dependence

    This presentation looks at how this disease advances from experimental usage to the late chronic stage. This progression is usually unnoticed by those who are most affected. Participants will have the opportunity to learn what can be done to recognize the progression of this illness and its effect on family members.

    • Session 3: July 22, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

    Family Aspects of Substance Dependence

    This session takes a look at how substance dependence influences family dynamics, the rules and roles played out by family members, in a dysfunctional family system such as those challenged by substance dependence.

    NO MEETING JULY 29• Session 4: Aug. 5, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

    Treatment of Substance Dependence

    Treatment of substance dependence begins with a discussion of the process of intervention and gives participants practical guidelines in this process. Different treatment options as well as the process of recovery will be reviewed.

    • Session 5: Aug. 12, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

    Relapse Prevention

    A relapse often occurs for many who struggle with challenges related to the recovery process of substance dependence. This session is a must for anyone and their family and friends who are recovering from substance dependence. Specific behavioral, emotional, and thought patterns associated with a relapse and ways to intervene will be discussed. Alternatives to relapse will be covered so substance dependence no longer has to be a controlling factor in people’s lives.

    • Session 6: Aug. 19, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

    Community Support

    Community Support for substance dependent people, their families and friends make the process of recovering easier and more effective. People from within the community who have confronted the challenge of overcoming the devastating effects of this disease and want to share their personal experiences throughout their recovery process give this presentation.
