It's lake season, and Hoosiers are planning road trips to the closest "great" one: Lake Michigan.

One of the five Great Lakes, it's the second largest by volume — and it includes sand dunes formed over thousands of years. It's the M in "HOMES," if you learned that acronym in elementary school. The lake has several public beaches in Indiana, most of which are open from 6 a.m. to 9 or 11 p.m., according to the National Park Service.

How deep is Lake Michigan? How deep are the other Great Lakes?

Lake Michigan is the second largest of the Great Lakes by volume. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates its maximum depth at about 925 feet. Lake Michigan also holds 1,180 cubic miles of water, second of the five Great Lakes.
