MONROE — Monroe County first responders rescued two individuals after their boat crashed on Lake Erie, causing it to partially sink Thursday night, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office reported.

At 11:26 p.m., Monroe County dispatch received multiple 911 calls of a sinking boat on Lake Erie in the Bolles Harbor channel, the sheriff’s office said.

When county deputies and Monroe County Fire arrived on scene, a 62-year-old Monroe resident and his 38-year-old son were found clinging to rocks near the Hoffman Memorial Fishing Pier in Bolles Harbor.

The office said the boat crashed into the seawall near channel marker No. 10 while the pair of boaters attempted to enter the harbor, leading to the hull of the boat to rupture and it to partially sink.

The two were taken to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo with critical injuries.

It was determined that speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, the sheriff’s office said.
